The Myrnam Red Hatters
Crimson Connection Chapter of the Red Hat Society

Our Beginnings

The Crimson Connection Chapter of the Red Hat Society began when Queen Gaytha, in October 2005, invited twelve of her friends to her home.  She told them the story of how the Society began with a poem and a gift of a red hat to a friend who was becoming fifty, and the custom grew until women over fifty  all over the world are now dressing in purple and wearing red hats and spreading kindness, laughter and silliness everywhere.  She plied them with grape juice (purple), and red and purple vegtables with crackers and dip, grape jello, whipped cream and (what else?) a cherry on top.  There were shared jokes, the queen wave and brim brushing  practice, hat modeling and general fun.  It was decided that the group would Gather (not meet, meetings are far to formal) at least once a month, with a different person each month responsible for the Gathering, though the Queen could call for a Gathering any time she royally pleased.  Everyone started to think of royal names that expressed their own personality, and went off laughing, ready to add more fun to their lives.

The Poem that Started it All - "Warning"No Rules, Just Guidelines

When I am an old woman, I shall wear purple, with a red hat that doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.

And I shall pend my pension on brandy and summer gloves and satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.

I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired and gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells and run my stick along the public railings and make up for the sobriety of my youth.

I shall go out in my slippers in the rain and pick flowers in other people's gardens,

and learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and gow more fat and eat three pounds of sausages at a go or only bread and pickles for a week and hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

but now we must have clothes that keep us dry and pay our rent and not swear in the street and set a good example for the children.

We will have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?

So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised when suddenly I am old and start to wear purple.

Gatherings

We have gone to craft shows, gone bowling, curling, picnicing, played games, learned about quilting, had potlucks, gone shopping (for red hats, of course), taken greenhouse tours, attended fashion shows, banquets, dinner theatres, visted at the senior's lodge, gone to a Birthday Bash and a Fashion Show/Tea with other chapters and we built and rode on a float in the Myrnam parade.  We won first place!  Everywhere we have gone, we have found good food (we can eat dessert first if we want to) and had good fun with friends.

There is more fun to be had in the future, and new members have been joining, even a Pink Hatter.  We are at 16 members now, with more interested.  Watch us grow !  and visit our photos pages.
